CRAWFORD BLOG: Pitt, Big East reach agreement for Pitt to exit after this season

Posted: Updated:

This was no surprise. Just two days after the Big East and Syracuse announced an agreement that would send the 'Cuse on to the ACC after next season, Pittsburgh and the Big East have agreed to the same deal.

Pitt, which sued the Big East to obtain an early release after the coming season, will get what it wanted, for an exit fee of $7.5 million, the same agreed to by Syracuse.

From the Big East release:

"This is another step for the Big East to take toward a very exciting future. With the addition of our eight new members, the Big East will be incredibly strong and vibrant," said Joe Bailey, Interim Commissioner of the Big East.

Steve Pederson, Athletic Director for the University of Pittsburgh said: "We have appreciated and enjoyed our membership in the Big East and wish them much success in the future. We are anxious to compete in our final season in the Big East and look forward to an exciting future in the Atlantic Coast Conference."

This effectively sets the membership of both conferences for the 2013 season.

Temple will rejoin the Big East in football this fall and will become a full conference member in 2013-14. Boise State and San Diego State were added as football-only members for 2013-14; Memphis, Central Florida, Houston and SMU joining for all sports starting the same season. Navy will also join for football in 2015.
