Inmate charged with assaulting corrections officer

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An officer at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections says he was injured by an inmate.

According to the uniform citation, on July 18 a corrections officer was in the process of collecting food trays after dinner had been served to the inmates.

The officer says he was reaching in to collect a tray from a cell occupied by 18-year-old Brian Edmonds when he briefly took his eyes off Edmonds. That's when the officer says Edmonds began assaulting him, striking him the face and left side of the head with a closed fist.

The officer was taken to University Hospital for treatment of a busted lip, along with a bruised forehead and ear. He was released, but says hospital officials told him he suffered a concussion.

Edmonds was charged with one count of assaulting a corrections officer.
