New homes being built to replace Sheppard Square

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville neighborhood is getting an upgrade.

Nine houses are being built, the first replacements for the Sheppard Square public housing complex.

Abandoned buildings and debris are all that's left of Sheppard Square today. It hardly looks like a place many people use to call home. But the city is working to turn it around.

The multi-million dollar project is expected to diversify the area. What was once the projects, is resurrecting as multi-income level housing.

In the past few weeks, nine new homes popped up around Smoketown. Most of these units will be public housing, others will be rented or sold.

People living in the area are excited about what this could mean for their neighborhood. Patricia Heinely says, "It was a very good thing, a very good thing and I can't wait to see what goes up hopefully it'll be better housing, something that's going to increase the neighborhood, bring better people more business more employment."

It's the third public housing replacement project in Louisville.

The housing authority is giving people who use to live in Sheppard Square first dibs on the new units.

They will be finished in December.
