LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police have released the name of the teenager found dead in the Ohio River Monday morning.
Coroner Rita Taylor says 18-year-old Jacari Redd drowned in the Ohio River this morning.
LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell says Redd's body was recovered just before 7 a.m. about a half-mile south of the Greenwood boat ramp.
Witnesses tell WDRB that Redd was swimming with a group of five or six people about 3 a.m. Monday when he apparently began to struggle and went under water. His friends called for help after their efforts to find him failed.
A police helicopter joined the search from the air, and water rescue and dive teams were called to help.
Police are calling it a tragic accident.
"It's probably a senseless death at this point," said Mitchell. "Obviously, swimming in the Ohio River is never a good idea."
Grieving family members arrived on the scene around 8 o'clock.
