LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The murders of a mother and her two children shocked the community, but one person was not surprised.
Sade' Goldsmith and her two sons were killed inside their PRP home earlier this month. Her mother says she knew it was only a matter of time: "Two or three days maybe before this happened," Donna Goldsmith told WDRB's Stephan Johnson, "I told her -- I said Sade', we going to have to do something because I feel like I am going to have to bury my children."
Police say John Devine broke into Sade' Goldsmith's house, shot her, and then shot their two young sons as they slept in her bedroom. It happened early on the morning of July 15th.
The mother allowed only WDRB's cameras inside the home as she and relatives still struggle to find answers about the horrific crime.
Investigators say John Devine tried to kill himself after shooting his family, but he survived and is now charged with the murders. But was he really trying to take his own life? Goldsmith says, "If he shot them in the head why didn't he shoot himself in the head? He wasn't trying to die."
Goldsmith says the murders didn't come as a surprise because Devine and her daughter had a violent history. "There was times when they fought and she'd lock the kids in the car...come back and keep on battling him."
Goldsmith believe's Devine's jealousy was the root of their problems. She says that was crystal clear during a 4th of July celebration at Sade' home. "So he's walking around, pacing the house, then he's mad because she didn't fix him a plate. The whole time I really didn't enjoy the 4th of July because I sat at the kitchen table and I watched him the whole day."
And it was shortly after the family gathering that Goldsmith warned her daughter. "She would just say, mom...he's not going to hurt them kids; you know how he loves those kids."
Goldsmith says she even tried to talk to Devine. "I would just tell him, you know, why is it that you have to put your hands on her and why is it that you only do it when there's no man around or anybody else around?"
Right now, Devine is still recovering at University Hospital. Once he is release he will be taken to Metro Corrections.
