Plea entered in 12-year-old's shooting

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The man accused of shooting a 12-year-old over a doorbell prank entered a plea Thursday.

Bishop, who was originally charged with attempted murder in the shooting, was in court early Thursday, where he pleaded guilty to assault under extreme emotional distress, wanton endangerment and tampering with physical evidence.

Bishop admitted to shooting Jacob Eberle with more than 100 pellets from a single shotgun blast as Eberle and some of his friends were playing doorbell pranks in the Glenmary neighborhood in June of 2011. The kids were playing a prank known as "Ding-Dong-Ditch" -- ringing doorbells and running away.

Eberle and his friends were running away when Eberle was shot in the back.

Bishop entered an Alford Plea, which means he maintains his innocence but admits there's enough evidence to convict him at trial.

Bishop was sentenced to 10 years. He will be eligible for parole after two years, and his attorneys can request shock probation after he serves 100 days.

Bishop could have been sentenced 10 to 20 years in prison on the assault charge alone if he had been convicted at trial.
