REPORT: Former Lake Dreamland fire chief died of drug, alcohol intoxication

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- A medical report reveals some new details about the sudden death of the former Lake Dreamland fire chief.

44-year-old John Wilkinson died last April from what was initially reported to be a heart attack.  But a medical examiner's report reveals that he died of drug and alcohol intoxication, with heart disease contributing to his death.  The report shows Wilkinson had cocaine in his system.

He responded to a brush fire just before he died.

Now the Kentucky Fire Commission will review whether his family is eligible for line-of-duty death benefits.
