Man who wounded cop dies in gunfight with police

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Police say a 27-year-old Indianapolis man ambushed a police officer during a traffic stop and shot him in the head before dying in a gunfight with other officers.

Authorities on Saturday identified the gunman as James Lockhart III, who they say has previous arrests for battery, resisting law enforcement and possession of marijuana.

Indianapolis police spokesman Kendale Adams says 29-year-old Fortville officer Matthew Fox remains hospitalized in good condition.

Adams says Fox stopped Lockhart in an Indianapolis enclave and was still in his patrol car when Lockhart shot him, striking him in the hand, forehead and chest.

Police cornered Lockhart in a nearby apartment complex where he left his car and began shooting at officers with an assault rifle. Police say the officers shot back, killing him.
