LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky State Fair is hiring about 800 temporary workers this year. The Fair Board started accepting applications on Aug. 6.
With unemployment still high in Kentucky, there were no shortage of applicants. On Monday, hundreds of people lined up outside the doors of the South Wing of the Kentucky Fair & Expo Center even before the doors opened.
Harvey Klein, a farmer by trade, was among the first in line Monday morning. He made the drive from Georgetown, Kentucky, for a chance to land one of the temporary jobs. He says he needs the extra income to keep his small farm operating.
"My wife works ... but currently I am unemployed -- and also semi-retired," Klein said. "So I decided that it'd be nice, with the economy the way it is, to have a little extra money on the side."
Wages start at $7.25 an hour but vary by position. The positions available include maintenance staff, grounds, housekeeping, admission gate keepers, tour guides, and tram drivers.
All applicants must apply in person and be at least 18 years old. The process takes about two hours. Applicants must have proper identification to verify work eligibility, such as a photo ID and a Social Security Card. Expired documents will not be accepted. The schedule for times and locations in which applications to apply are:
