Kentucky Lottery sets new sales record

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Lottery says it's set a new sales record.  Its sales for Fiscal Year 2012 were $823.5 million.  That includes $55.7 million in free tickets.

The old record was in Fiscal Year 2009, and was $810.5 million.

Record sales mean record-breaking proceeds given over to the state.  The lottery earned $216.4 million for scholarship and grants programs.  It paid out $459.1 million to lottery players.

Lottery officials credit improving economic conditions and changes to the scratch-off ticket program for a large part of the sales increase.  They also cited Powerball becoming a $2 game and the launch of the 5 Card Cash game.
