LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear planted flags on Thursday at the gravesides of fallen Kentucky service members at the site of one of the pivotal battles of World War Two.

Omaha Beach was the site of the American and Allied attack against Germany on June 6th, 1944.

Gov. Beshear said, "We walked the beach where thousands of Americans were killed fighting to liberate Europe.  This place has special meaning to every American. Being a veteran myself, it was a very emotional moment for me as taps was played to honor the dead."

The governor is on an economic development trip to France and Germany.
