Back to School fair helps area families prepare

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- As many as 5,000 students in Louisville are getting a head start on the school year.

They picked up free school supplies and much more at today's Back to School giveaway and health fair.

First Gethsemane Center for Family Development hosted the event to help the community with the huge costs of getting ready for school.

In addition to school supplies, the event offered everything from free haircuts to ID's for children.

"I think there's just tough economic times, we all recognize that," said First Gethsemane pastor T. Vaughn Walker. "There's really high unemployment, especially in this part of Louisville, and whatever we can do to relieve a little bit of that pressure, that's what we're trying to do."

Church members, local businesses, and members of metro council collected donations for today's giveaway.
