Police charge man with murder after Sunday's homicide

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police have charged a Louisville man with one count of murder in connection with a homicide that took place near Churchill Downs early Sunday evening.

LMPD Public Information Officer Alicia Smiley says 65-year-old Robert Mathews was taken in for questioning and charged with murder this evening. She says it is currently unclear exactly where the homicide occurred.

Police say an injured man was found on the front porch of a residence in the 200 block of West Kenton Street. at around 5:30 Sunday evening. The man was taken to University Hospital, where he later died.

Smiley says police have determined that the man was stabbed at least one time and is believed to be a white male in his 40's. There is no word on his identity at this time.

Neighbors told WDRB that the suspect and the victim were good friends and had a fight Sunday evening.
