Eastern Ky. students have first day of school in warehouse

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Yesterday, we showed you the first day of school in Henryville, Ind., where the junior and senior high school was rebuilt after the March tornado.

Students and teachers at Salyersville Grade School in Magoffin County, Ky. also returned to school yesterday.

The eastern Kentucky school was destroyed and a janitor was injured when a tornado hit their school.

You can see the strength of the EF-3 tornado when it blew the man through a doorway by watching the video in the video player above.

Now, students are having classes in an old warehouse that has been painted with cheerful colors.

"The colors have just lifted our spirits up," said Delana Brickey, a student. "When we first came here, it was just like white and dreary. It's just lifted our spirits up with all those colors."

Teachers say the bright colors have a practical effect as well: the more cheerful surroundings actually help promote learning.
