NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- Theft, forgery and check fraud -- a former Ivy Tech teacher is accused of taking advantage of one of his students. Floyd Skirvin's past led the judge to hold him without bond on this case.
Skirvin was arrested Wednesday afternoon. Before Thursday's bond hearing, WDRB's Jennifer Baileys asked Skirvin about the charges against him. "Mr. Skirvin, did you steal from your students?"
"No I didn't," he replied.
Skirvin denies the four felony charges of forgery, theft, and check fraud.
Prosecutor Jeremy Mull says Skirvin convinced one of his Ivy Tech students into investing $2,000 by showing fake E-trade receipts.
Skirvin taught HVAC at Ivy Tech, not business or economics, even though he says he has a Masters in business.
The prosecutor says Skirvin claims the student's money is all gone.
Skirvin says he lost his job over these charges and has no money. He asked a judge for a public defender.
The alleged victim's mother testified that she's afraid of what Skirvin might do to her son if he is released from jail on bond.
Skirvin says he's on probation in Marion County, but the prosecutor could not say why.
Because of the probation, the judge is holding Skirvin without bond for 15 days until the probation can be worked out and then he will be held on a $25,000 cash bond.
His trial is set for January. The prosecutor says if Skirvin is convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 17 years in prison and several thousand dollars in fines.
