Kentucky State Fair takes swine flu precautions

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky State Fair is taking precautions against swine flu by establishing inspections and daily assessments of all swine there.

Staff members from the Kentucky State Veterinarians will take a look at all swine as they arrive.  If any of them show symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, or labored breathing, a veterinarian will evaluate them.  Any animal that appears to have a respiratory infection will not be allowed into the fair.

The State Veterinarian will also assess all the animals in the Swine Pavilion each day.  Any animals showing possible symptoms of swine flu will be isolated and tested.

State Fair Board President and CEO Harold Workman also pointed out that plenty of hand-washing stations are available at the fair.  He encouraged fairgoers to wash their hands as they arrive in and exit from livestock areas.

The Kentucky State Fair runs from August 16–26 at the Kentucky Exposition Center.
