Northpoint rebuilt after riot 3 years ago

Posted: Updated:

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- As the third anniversary of a fiery riot at a central Kentucky prison approaches, prison officials say the facility has been rebuilt and will soon be back to the same population it once had.

Inmates at Northpoint Training Center in Danville set fire to several buildings during a melee on Aug. 21, 2009. Several hours later, six buildings including the kitchen and all but one dormitory were declared uninhabitable.

Northpoint Warden Steve Haney told The Advocate Messenger that the facility has come a long way since then. He says a new programs facility opened in June that includes several security upgrades and a new building for visitations.

He said the current population is 1,098, and that number will slowly increase to 1,256, which was the number of inmates before the riot.
