Judge berates suspect accused in shooting of children

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A judge had harsh words Monday morning for one of the suspects accused of shooting two young girls over the weekend.

Willie Simms is charged with assault and wanton endangerment in a shooting at City View Apartments Saturday night.

Dalisha Jeffery faces the same charges.

The judge entered not guilty pleas for them both -- and scolded Simms.

"But for the grace of God, you're only facing assault. You very well -- under the circumstances -- could be facing murder charges," he said.

An 11-year-old girl was hit in the leg in that shooting. A bullet also grazed a 7-year-old girl. Both of them were treated and released from the hospital.

The fact that the suspects are in jail puts some people at ease.

"They want safe environments for their children," Community activist Christopher 2X said Sunday. "This situation last night was very chaotic, there's some things the camera couldn't capture because they couldn't be here at that time."

People living in the neighborhood are still on edge after the violent crime involving children. Jordan Fields heard the gunshots and ran outside. Fields says, "If you're gonna open fire on the porch with kids on it and their mama is in there, I think it's just wrong."

Metrosafe officials say the shots were fired from a passing car.
