INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Candidates for U.S. Senate and governor are saying Congress needs to return to work and approve a farm bill.
Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock chastised lawmakers Thursday for not approving the measure while the nation suffers through a continuing drought. Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Gregg says Republican Mike Pence needs to get "back out to Washington, D.C." and help Hoosier farmers.
Washington gridlock and the incredibly low popularity of Congress have long been talking points for Democrats and Republicans, but the delay in approving the new federal farm bill has evolved into a campaign issue while the drought continues.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's top official in Indiana leader says aid to farmers is limited until Congress approves the farm bill.
