West Ky. medical examiner office still empty

Posted: Updated:

OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) -- A state medical examiner's office in western Kentucky remains open after being threatened with closure earlier this year, but officials still haven't filled the open position.

Now officials are hoping that a new salary for first-year medical examiners may entice applicants to the Madisonville office, which hasn't had a medical examiner since June 2011.

The Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer reports that western Kentucky legislators, coroners and law enforcement personnel argued to keep the office open after it was considered for closure as a cost-saving move during the 2012 General Assembly session.

Jennifer Brislin, a spokeswoman for the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, said a new salary schedule that took effect on Thursday sets the salary for a first-year medical examiner at between $108,000 and $141,000.
