Ind. farmers continue to sell cantaloupe, despite salmonella fears

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some Indiana farmers are refusing to stop selling cantaloupe after a nationwide salmonella outbreak.

More than 150 people all across the country became ill after eating cantaloupe from southwest Indiana.

Fifty people in Kentucky have been sickened and two have died.

Health officials advise throwing away cantaloupes bought since July 7.

One Indiana farmer says he has a good reason to keep selling the fruit.

"I know who grows the product and how it's cared for, so that eliminates any concern of any danger or any quality issues," said Ron Harris, owner of Locally Owned Gardens.

Health workers say you can't tell whether your cantaloupe is contaminated just by looking at it. They say you shouldn't eat the fruit if you're not sure where it was grown.
