First morning of school transport for JCPS goes well

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- As of halfway through the first day of school, JCPS seems to be passing the transportation test.

Buses arrived on time at Portland Elementary School on Tuesday morning.  But about ten or fifteen students showed up with no information.  The school had no idea where they had come from, and no idea where to send them home.

"They did not even know their last names or first names," says Krista Alexander of Portland Elementary.  "A couple of them did know their first names.  So we are in charge of where they're getting home and going from there."

The school counselor's office began to look like a war room.  Every bus ride is being checked, every walker, every car rider, to make sure every child gets home.  For those unknown students, authorities will backtrack the route they took to school, and in some cases do a home visit to try to figure out where each child belongs before the bell rings and school is dismissed.

Meanwhile, 100,000 school children went back to the classroom on Tuesday, and these first days of learning are expected to set the tone for the entire year.

"We watched a little show about Nemo, who was excited on his first day of school," says 3rd grader Landon Martin.

Portland Principal Angela Hosch says, "One of our big efforts this year is to make kids more aware of their own learning.  And we want them to start identifying what their own needs are so that they can understand their partnership in learning.  So teachers are guiding them to be more knowledgeable about whether they need more hands-on learning, if they'd like to have more coaching."

JCPS says the last elementary bus discharged its students at 9:40 a.m.  That's 20 minutes faster than last year.
