JCPS board approves property tax increase

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County property owners will pay 3.4 percent more in taxes to fund Jefferson County Public Schools in the next year.

The school board approved the tax increase Monday night after a short hearing.  It is another year in which the board approved tax hikes just below the limit that would require further oversight.  The 3.4 percent figure is an increase the board can authorize with nothing more than a public hearing for feedback.

The increase would bring the district an additional $17 million a year. A person with a house valued at $100,000 would pay an additional $23 each year.

Board members argue a tax increase is needed because state and federal funding has been cut.

"Stimulus dollars have gone away, and other dollars just because of the economy," said Diane Porter, JCPS board chair. "We want to make sure we are not losing services to our students at any time."

WDRB's Kelly Davis explains the votes and rationale for the increase in a live report on WDRB News @ 10.
