New pizza restaurant in Middletown

Posted: Updated:

Middletown, Ky. (WDRB News) -- A Middletown couple says their new pizza restaurant is not just another run of the mill pizza place.  David and Dana Sims believe their first venture into the restaurant business will be successful.

Tired of the corporate world, David was ready to take a chance and open his own business.  "I was wanting to get out of the commercial printing business, which I had been in for 25 years," he says.

About three years ago on a kids soccer trip to Memphis he and his family went out to eat at a Mellow Mushroom Pizza restaurant.

"We went in, met the owner and talked to them," says David. "About a year and a half later we went back to talk with them more in-depth and here we are today opening a new restaurant."

So now David and Dana are the owners of their own Mellow Mushroom Pizza franchise store in Middletown overseeing 90 employees.

Mellow Mushroom, based in Atlanta, is designed appeal to customers who like pizza but would like to eat a more healthy diet.

"There are no steroids in the meat products, we have gluten free pizza and gluten free salad dressing," says David.

Their restaurant, which includes a bar, seats about 250 people twice the size of the average franchise store.

Each franchise owner can decorate their store they way they wish. In the Sims restaurant there is a giant mural of Churchill Downs and horses racing around the track.

"Our store is based on our vision," says Dana Sims, "there is no other Mellow Mushroom store like ours, it is very unique which is exciting to us."

The Sims restaurant is just south of I-64 on Blankenbaker Parkway which has seen a number of small retail stores open here recently.

"Shelbyville Road is built up, Main Street has been here for a hundred years, but this is a part of Middletown that is undergoing a big growth spurt right now," says David Eggleston of the Middletown Chamber of Commerce.

The Sims encourage others who are thinking about opening their own business to take the chance.

"Have people chase their dreams," says David," and believe in themselves, and Dana and I would like to be a part of that and help people to do that."

A second Mellow Mushroom Pizza restaurant in the Louisville area but not owned by the Sims is set to open next week in St. Matthews.
