LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Fair organizers are calling the 2012 event a success, despite lower attendance numbers than last year.
This year's fair drew 599,854 people. That's down from 605,565 attendees in 2011.
Harold Workman, Fair Board President & CEO, pointed out that plenty of people attended the first five days of the fair because JCPS was not yet in session. "We encouraged families to enjoy the last days of summer vacation at the Fair with deeper discounts on Thrillway rides, which was very well received," Workman said in a news release.
Workman also said the fair's operations went smoothly, and he pointed to a military day that was held for the first time, with admission and ride special for active duty military and veterans. He also said numbers were steady for agriculture entries in spite of this year's draught.
The fair is said to generate about $16.5 million in economic impact for the Louisville area and the state.
