NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) -- A southern Indiana man convicted of murder in his wife's unsolved 1990 slaying has been sentenced to 55 years in prison.

Floyd County Superior Court Judge Maria Granger told 54-year-old Christopher Baxter before she sentenced him Friday that he had brutally slain his wife and shown a disregard for authority throughout his life.

The News and Tribune reports Baxter was convicted in July by a jury in the June 1990 killing of 32-year-old Robin Baxter, whose remains were later found in the Ohio River.

Prosecutor Keith Henderson said a medical examiner found that Robin Baxter had died from several blows to the head.

Baxter's attorney, William Gray, said his client has maintained his innocence and "believes on appeal he will get a chance to present that innocence."
