LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The widow of a retired Kentucky police chief has died just five days after he was murdered.

82-year-old Herbert Proffitt was shot and killed Tuesday as he walked to his mailbox.

Police say 81-year-old Charles Hammer of Tompkinsville did it in retaliation for putting him behind bars many years ago.

Supporting Heroes say Proffitt's wife Bernice fell ill just hours after her husband was shot and killed at their home.

She died today.

Visitation for Herbert Proffitt was already planned for today with his funeral tomorrow.
