Henryville marks 6 months since EF-4 tornado

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The small town of Henryville, Indiana continues to rebuild after an EF-4 tornado tore through the center of town.

The community has come so far since March 2nd.

A local church hosted a picnic to show its appreciation for the volunteers, and remember those who suffered from the storm.

It took more than 10-thousand volunteers to get people back on their feet. Within minutes, people poured into town to support the community.

A local resident and volunteer, Paul Smith, says, "I think the attitude of the community, everybody came together and I think everybody's stayed together and that makes me real proud to be part of this community."

Sunday, residents took the time to look around finding so much to be thankful for. Henryville school was rebuilt, in time for the new school year - businesses are open again and dozens of homes restored.

There is still a lot of work to do, but people celebrated how far they've come.

Father Steven Schaftlein, says, "It's good to pause and take a look at where we've been because now we can move ahead more enthusiastically and more energy to address the needs of the larger part that remains to be done."

The need for volunteers in Henryville will continue in the weeks and months ahead.

To volunteer, contact March 2 Recovery at (502) 599-8557 or email vrc@march2recovery.org for more information.
