Central KY man dies after being struck by train

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) -- A central Kentucky man has died after being struck by a train while he was walking on the railroad tracks.

Scott County coroner John Goble told the Lexington Herald-Leader that 43-year-old Robert Alexander was walking southbound on the tracks near downtown Georgetown at 5:15 p.m. EDT Sunday when a train came up behind him.

Goble said the train engineer sounded his emergency horn and attempted, but failed, to stop. Alexander, Goble said, apparently looked behind him at the train and continued to walk on the tracks. Goble said alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in the death.

Georgetown Police Lt. Phil Halley says police are unsure why Alexander chose to walk on the tracks or why he did not avoid the train as it approached.
