POLICE: Driver fled because he "thought he killed" motorcyclist

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville driver is facing misdemeanor charges after police say he fled the scene of an accident where he thought he'd killed a motorcyclist.

According to an arrest report, police were called to the corner of Grinstead Drive and Ray Avenue early Tuesday morning, where a motorcyclist and a gold Saturn were involved in an accident.

The driver of the gold Saturn allegedly fled the scene.

Police say a witness was able to get part of the Saturn's license plate number. Officers later found the Saturn half a mile away on Patterson Avenue. The vehicle -- which had been damaged -- was being driven by 42-year-old John F. Cherry, according to police.

As police approached, Cherry allegedly told them that he "thought he killed the motorcyclist" and "got scared," so he drove away. His car died in the 2200 block of Patterson Avenue, so he could go no further.

While being arrested, Cherry asked police to retrieve a box he had placed on the sidewalk, just before the officers arrived, according to an arrest report.

Police say they found the box. They also allegedly found six GPS units, a wallet, two iPods and multiple credit cards.

Police say all of this property had been stolen.

Cherry is charged with leaving the scene of accident and failing to render aid, receipt of stolen property and failure to maintain required insurance.
