Kentucky Humane Society gets $168,000 grant to spay, neuter pets

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Humane Society has received a sizable grant to spay and neuter certain dogs and cats in parts of Louisville for free, but the program isn't going as planned.

La'Monica Jackson pounds the pavement about three days week, placing flyers, knocking on doors and talking to the public.

"We're giving free spay and neuters to pit bulls, pit mixes," Jackson says.

The Kentucky Humane society received a $168,000 grant to fix cats and pit bulls in Louisville's 40214 and 40215 zip codes for free. Most animals Louisville in shelters come from these zip codes.

"We know the potential is there based on data that we've taken," says Andrea Blair of the Kentucky Humane Society. "We've done a lot of surveying and the intake from these zips."

Outreach is the key to the new urban transport program, and that's La'Monica's job. She'll pick up your pet, bring it to the snip clinic and return it to you.

"It's not just for pet population, it's for the health of the pet so they live a longer healthier life," says Dr. Heidi Hulon, a veterinarian.

"We know one cat, unsprayed or [not] neutered, she and her offspring can have 400,000 animals in seven years," says Blair.

The return on the investment is not yet there. The first-year goal of the grant was to spay or neuter 88 pit bulls and 792 cats. So far, KHS has only fixed 17 dogs and 93 cats from the targeted area.

Leaders fear if they don't reach their benchmark, they'll have to return all the money.

"And that's our whole goal: to keep as many animals out of shelters and in loving homes," Blair says.

If the program takes off, KHS hopes to expand to the entire city of Louisville. If you don't have a cat or pit bull, financial aide is available to fix your pet. The regular cost is about $50-$75.
