LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It is a local business that continues to evolve.
Heine Brothers Coffee continues to move forward with changes including the sale of wine and beer at some of its locations.
Right now four of the company's 13 stores sell wine and beer.
The addition is designed to draw customers into the stores later in the day when coffee may not be their first choice of a beverage, according to co-owner Chris Lavenson.
"The sale of wine and beer is a nice offset in the afternoon and evening," he explains, "when people don't always want something that is caffeinated, but they want to enjoy a beverage that has been handcrafted."
Due to the size of some of the older stores, and ABC regulations, not all of the stores will sell wine and beer.
The company is in the process of deciding how to grow after the merger last year of Heine Brothers and Vint Coffee, both of which for now are keeping their separate identities.
"Some of our locations are prohibited by space internally," says Lavenson, "we just don't have enough room to put in a lot of the equipment needed to support the wine and beer program."
Lavenson says coffee are among the last places where people from different backgrounds can still gather and enjoy a little down time.
"You could be sitting next to someone who is having a first date, behind you could be a business group signing a real estate deal, and there could be a student studying for medical school," he says.
He says it is a good time to be in the coffee business.
"Some of the big players like Starbucks have done a great job of educating people and making coffee and boutique coffee more approachable and so it is just the tip of the ice burg," says Lavenson.
The growth in Heine Brothers continues. The chain plans to open another store by the end of the year on Shelbyville Road in St. Matthews.
