Second victim in church shooting dies

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A University Hospital spokeswoman has confirmed that a second victim in Thursday's Springdale Community Church shooting has died.

Melissa Deaver confirmed that Marvin Fisher passed away this morning.

73-year-old David Merritt also passed away as a result of the shooting. Police say 55-year-old Mahmoud Hindi shot the men at a homeowners association meeting Thursday night.

The family of 69-year-old Marvin Fisher released a statement to WDRB Sunday evening. His son, Paul Fisher, says "My father was a great man. This was a senseless act of violence, and we are still trying to come to grips with what happened."

Officials say Mahmoud Hindi, who lived in the Spring Creek neighborhood with Merritt and Fisher, had been involved in a longstanding dispute with the homeowners association regarding a driveway and a fence on his property.

Mahmoud Hindi has been charged with Murder, Assault, and 7 counts of wanton endangerment.

However, Louisville Metro Police say with today's passing of Marvin Fisher, the assault charge is expected to be upgraded to a murder charge.

Mahmoud Hindi is in jail on a $1 million bond.

The passing of Marvin Fisher comes on the same day a prayer gathering was held at Springdale Community Church for nearby spring Creek homeowners and neighbors.

"A lot of hugs going on in there. A lot of support," says lead pastor Jason Autry.

It also included the family of the accused shooter, 55-year-old Mahmoud Hindi.

Hindi's son spoke during the prayer gathering. Neighbors tells WDRB it was an emotional time for everyone.

"It was very well spoken and he expressed his grief and sorrow for what has taken place here Thursday night," says Jason Autry.

"We were obviously very appreciative that they came as well. You can't imagine what they're going through and how difficult this is for every family involved," says Jeremy White, executive pastor at the church.

In the 9:30 a.m. regular church service, Pastor Jason Autry touched on Thursday night's shooting that happened inside during a Homeowners Association meeting.

The pastor's wife was among 5 church women who were in the church at the time for bible study.

"She was on site. She is okay and it was a difficult few hours before I saw her and before we were able to speak," says Jason Autry.

He says, their faith has helped them get through this tough time, along with a sense of community.

The pastor has been in touch with friends and family of both David Merritt and Marvin Fisher.

Church officials say they will continue to step up to be there for nearby neighbors.
