LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB-TV)--A weekend drive-by shooting has rattled a west Louisville neighborhood. It happened Saturday afternoon at the corner of 28th and Grand Avenue.
"It's a picture that I'll never forget," says Dwight Sweeney, who witnessed the shooting.
Sweeney is talking about the images of a man being gunned down in broad daylight.
He says, "It was like nothing happened bad."
And in front of at least dozens of witnesses. Sweeney says, "The car stopped, the guy got out, started shooting, everybody started running and hiding and ducking and then he got in the car and you never heard the car peel out or anything...the car just took off."
22 year old Kentrail Robbins was targeted and died a short time later. There are still bullet holes at the scene and even a small makeshift memorial.
"A drive by on this street is what shocked folks," says Councilwoman Attica Scott, who represents the first district.
Councilwoman Scott is fed up with the gun violence, and says it's keeping her from doing the real work she was elected to do. "The work I want to be doing is addressing economic development, economic growth, abandoned and vacant properties, building relationships with our schools. That's the work I want to be doing, not responding when there's a shooting and folks are living in fear."
And right now, there are still a lot of folks living in fear, according to Scott. "I've talked to parents who are afraid...afraid for their kids and trying to do the best that they can to alleviate the fear to their babies."
But help could be on the way; recently, metro police announced a new unit that will address violent crime. Scott says, "I'm hopeful with whatever the chief comes up with that is addressing this gun violence because it's at epidemic proportions at this point."
And that's why Dwight Sweeney is speaking out. He says, "Look, I have a fear too. I mean, I don't like being on this camera talking about what happened but at the same time, how are we going to stop it?"
