Final step in lifting second section of new Milton-Madison Bridge

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The final step in lifting the second section of the new Milton-Madison Bridge takes place Tuesday.

It involves placing a large beam beneath the new span.  It will be used next year when the entire new bridge is slid into place.

It took 15 hours for the 727-foot section of the new bridge to be floated, then lifted into place onto temporary piers.  Special hydraulic jacks and steel cables lifted the section, which weighs over 2,000 tons, into place 90 feet above the water.

River traffic at the site between Milton, Ky. and Madison, Ind. was halted during the operation.

The new bridge is expected to open to traffic in 2013.
