New comic teaches students about bullying

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- "On a scale of 1 to 10 bullying is bad -- 10 is what I would rate bullying, that's how bad it is," said 5th grader Bryce Boerste at Shepherdsville Elementary in Bullitt County on Wednesday.

That was his reaction to a new comic book that aims at teaching students about bullying.  It's called "Rise Above" and was published by Archie Comics.

The daughter-in-law of one of the founders of the company, Nancy Silberkleit, spoke to a group of Bullitt County students.  The comic is about a girl who is bullied because she has braces.

Silberkleit is a former public school educator who wants to teach students how to never let anyone define who they want you to be:  "Seeing what has been done unjustly, wrong, that act of bullying is so hurtful, so painful, the loneliness, brokenness you feel and hearing about this on the news and the media it's getting to be more."

Each student was handed their own copy of the comic.
