LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- A Louisville daycare owner charged with defrauding the state of more than $300,000 might avoid going to trial.
Lavonia Lewars was back in court Thursday. She's the owner of Heavenly Angels Daycare. It's the same daycare that was involved in a deadly van crash.
Last month she was indicted for overbilling a government child-care subsidy program. In court Thursday, attorneys on both sides told the judge of a possible plea deal in the works.
Prosecutor John Balenovich said, "I think that it would be helpful for this case if we could have one more pretrial. At that time, the Commonwealth will make its final and best offer and then we'll know whether or not we will plea or go to trial."
Lewars' attorney David Schuler said, "There's been some discussions together about resolution in the case, and we think it would be prudent for both parties to have more time to continue looking at discovery and discussing a proposed resolution in the case."
Lewars will be back in court in January.
