Kentucky ranks third in the U. S. for childhood obesity. Personal Trainer Carlos Rivas from FitCorp explains a new program he's developed with a local dietitian designed to help children and their families slim down.
In recognition of National Childhood Obesity Month, FitCorp and Proformance Fitness has launched "A Healthy Start", a fitness and nutrition program designed by Exercise Physiologist and Professional Personal Trainer Carlos Rivas for children who are overweight or obese. This program is part of a national effort to eradicate childhood obesity in the state of Kentucky. Kentucky ranks third in childhood obesity. During the past four decades, obesity rates have soared among all age groups, increasing more than fourfold among children ages six to seventeen.
The growing rate of childhood obesity in our country is alarming. National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and FitCorp recognizes the serious threat obesity poses to the health of our children and the importance of decreasing its prevalence not only in Louisville, but also across the entire United States.
Obese young people have an 80 percent chance of becoming obese adults and are more likely than children of normal weight to become overweight or obese adults. As a result, they are more at risk for associated adult health problems such as heart disease, type II diabetes, sleep apnea, stroke, and osteoarthritis. The psychosocial consequences can hinder these kids academically and socially.
The program will include a highly individualized personal training component and a nutrition component designed by our registered dietician. We will teach you and your family how to make exercise more enjoyable, how to fit it in your day, and how to eat properly. Our studies show that parents have an enormous influence over their children's lifestyles by the example they set and the decisions they make.
We believe that all children deserve "A Healthy Start in Life"; it's our responsibility to make that possible. The fight against childhood obesity starts this October at Proformance Fitness on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00-5:00pm, and the results will last a lifetime.
