Federal help lets Bellarmine prepare students for careers of the future

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Bellarmine University is getting federal help to prepare students for the careers of the future.

Congressman John Yarmuth presented the school with a $600,000 federal grant Monday morning.  The money will allow the university to award 20 scholarships to students for the next four years.

The primary goal is to increase the number of students majoring in chemistry, physics, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Yarmuth explains, "I think last year there were two Ph.Ds in physics granted in the entire state, so we're way far behind a lot of places in developing this kind of talent in our community and in our state.  So this is a very important program that Bellarmine has instituted."

Students who receive scholarships must maintain a minimum grade-point average and meet other academic requirements.
