LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Metro Council has cameras to help catch illegal dumping in parts of west Louisville. The problem is, they have not been installed.
And if you take a walk or drive through some of the alleyways in district one you'll find tires, sectionals and even mattresses.
"The dumping is getting worse; people don't use the alley...they don't go all the way through it," says Terrence Williams, neighbor.
Williams lives on 32nd Street. His home is between Virginia and Hale Avenues. He says the dead-end alley behind his home is one of the main dumping spots.
"No one ever really goes all the way through there...the end down there so that's what makes it the idea spot for dumping," says Williams.
WDRB's Stephan Johnson went to one of the Metro Council members fighting to clean up that area for answers. Councilwoman Attica Scott represents District One and led the drive to purchase cameras for the area. She says, "Solid waste management is still testing them to make sure that they are you know capturing what they need to capture in the daylight and at nighttime."
But for now, the only thing being captures is trash...and lots of it. We even found loaded bags of garbage dumped on the sidewalk.
"It's pretty frustrating for us because we get people asking all the time...where are the cameras, when are they going up? We got to do something about this illegal dumping and I have to keep saying we're waiting, we're waiting, we're waiting," says Scott.
But waiting isn't easy when it's your alley. And besides, Williams says what you see is only part of the problem. "Because it's a problem with flies, disease and then the smell as well. It smells bad...very bad in the morning times."
Councilwoman Scott hopes the cameras will be installed by the end of the month.
