ELIZABETHTOWN, KY. (WDRB) -- A Fort Knox soldier and his wife are thrown in jail, accused of neglecting their two and a half year old and 11-month old boys.
Captain Virgil Willoughby of the Elizabethtown Police Dept. explains, "We received a call just after 8 p.m. Sunday evening that reported the parents had left their two children at a residence."
He says the officers, "did hear a baby crying which led them into the bedroom where they found a two year old asleep and the 11 month old screaming and crying."
Now those boys' parents, Christopher and Danielle Nyborg, face charges of wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor.
The incident happened at the Cardinal Creek apartments in Elizabethtown. The Nyborgs told police they were coming to a Walmart to pick up medication. They says they got back home just about five to ten minutes after police arrived. Officers say they do not know how long they'd actually been gone.
Captain Willoughby says, "We're talking about parents who are 22 and 21 years of age. Obviously there's some issues with their being young parents. Why they would make a choice to do something like that is beyond me."
Military officials confirm Private Christopher Nyborg is assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division at Fort Knox.
Cpt. Taya Grace with 3rd Brigade Public Affairs at Fort Knox says, "If the soldier is found guilty then the military will take legal action. If he's found guilty other than that at this time we're pending more from the police department's investigation."
While Nyborg remains behind bars, his wife has bailed out of jail on $2500 bond. She declined to comment on this story.
Police say in Kentucky there's no legal age for leaving children at home, but your children should be responsible and mature enough to articulate where you're going, have an emergency plan, and know how to contact you should something go wrong.
CPS placed the Nyborg's children in state foster care.
