Southern Indiana residents could get second area code

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Southern Indiana residents could get a new area code.

The 812 area code is expected to run out of numbers in 2015.

For that reason, the telecommunication industry has filed a formal request with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to add a new code to the area.

All customers in the 812 area code would keep their current 812 numbers, but new numbers issued would have a different area code.

Public hearings will be scheduled early next year to give residents a chance to offer input.
