LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hundreds walkers and runners embraced a cause intended to help save lives.
This morning, about 300 people showed up in Iroquois Park for the third annual Legacy of Life 5K that helps bring awareness to organ donations and recipients.
This is the first year the event has been timed.
Proceeds for the race will go to help build a Donor Memorial Wall at the University of Louisville Hospital.
"It's very important because the more that we can get the word out about organ donation, and have that conversation within our families, the more we're going to have that opportunity for organ donation across the board," says participant Lindsay Siewert.
In Kentucky, about 900 people are on the waiting list for an organ transplant.
In Indiana, the number on the waiting list is closer to 1500.
