Jim and Georgia House

Jim and Georgia House started their vacuum business out of their basement in 1954. Jim was a former door to door salesman with experience in the business. After growing their business for three years they opened their first store at 1622 Bardstown Rd. They sold used and rebuilt vacuums while also offering repair service.

Soon they outgrew this location and moved to 1576 Bardstown Rd. With more room, they began selling new vacuums also. They stayed at this location for 11 years, but do to a lack of parking for their customers, in 1970 they bought an old service station at 1525 Bardstown Rd. This location had off street parking.

In March of 1972, their oldest son Mike came to work for them. Four years later Jim and Georgia decided to move to Elizabethtown. So in 1976 Mike became manager of A-1 Vacuum, and Georgia opened a second A-1 Vacuum close to her new home.

In 1980 Jim and Georgia decided to expand again, and they opened a third location in Jeffersontown. This location was eventually sold to their daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Doug Tudor in 1986.

With the success of his parents business, Jim and Georgia's son Charlie opened a 4th location in 1984 with his wife Karen. This A-1 Vacuum was located at 1814 N Dixie Blvd, until 2011 when Charlie and Karen's. business out grew their building. Needing more space they purchased a larger building. They are now located at 2079 S. Dixie Blvd.

Mike's son Matt came into the family business in 2003. He took over as manager of the Bardstown Rd Location in 2011 when Mike opened the newest A-1 vacuum in LaGrange.

John House, Georgia's youngest son, worked with his mother at the Elizabethtown location until she passed in 2009. He is now the owner and operator of A-1 Vacuum in Elizabethtown.

Georgia always said "Vacuums may change, but A-1's Quality in Sales and Service will always stay the same!"
