LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police have arrested a Louisville father after they say he put the welfare of his children at stake.

According to an arrest report, police responded to a burglar alarm at a home near the corner of S. 27th St. and Cedar St. shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.

An 8-year-old allegedly answered the door when they arrived. Police say the home was filled with smoke, and when the officer went to the kitchen, they found pots burning on a live stove.

That's when police allegedly found 26-year-old Jess L. Taylor II passed out on the sofa. Police say Taylor was the father of an unknown number of children found in the home, and was supposed to be taking care of them. However, police say he was so intoxicated when they found him that he was, "incapable of taking responsibility for the children."

The children were "extremely scared and were in danger to the potential for the house to catch fire," police say.

Taylor was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a minor.
