Fort Campbell leaders to serve as Afghan security advisers

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Army leaders from Fort Campbell are heading to Afghanistan this fall. But this time they won't find themselves on the front lines.

Instead, about 1,900 troops from the 101st Airborne Division will serve as military advisers.

They will help prepare the Afghan security forces for the withdrawal of NATO troops.

Army officials say taking a hands-off approach is the only way to ensure the Afghans will be capable of maintaining their own security.
