LOUISVILLE, (Ky.) – It is becoming increasingly likely that
Louisville, Kentucky and Indiana (you choose the order) are going to be ranked
1-2-3 in the Associated Press pre-season college basketball poll.
That is something that has never happened.
Trust me. I checked. All three local teams have never
started the season in the Top Five, according to poll guru Jim O'Connell of
the Associated Press.
They have started the season in the Top 10 four times, but
not since the 1983 season when Louisville made the Final Four in Albuquerque.
The pre-season poll began with the 1961-62 season.
Here is the list of Top 10 group starts:
1974: No. 3 Indiana, No. 9
Louisville, No. 10 Kentucky (None made Final Four.)
1976: No. 1 Indiana, No. 6
Kentucky, No. 8 Louisville (IU won the title.)
1977: No. 5 Indiana, No. 6
Kentucky, No. 9 Louisville (None made Final Four.)
1983: No. 4 Kentucky, No. 8
Louisville, No. 9 Indiana (U of L lost to Houston in semifinals.)
Why is this a blog-worthy item today?
Because Chris Dortch, editor of Blue Ribbon Basketball
Yearbook, has shared the news that Blue Ribbon is starting the 2012-13 season
with Indiana ranked first, Louisville second and Kentucky third. Athlon Sports also has all three in its top three.
IU center Cody Zeller and Peyton Siva, Louisville's senior
point guard, are Blue Ribbon Cover guys – joined by Doug McDermott of
Creighton, Michael Snaer of Florida State and DeShaun Thomas of Ohio State. (For
the record, that's two former Mr. Basketballs from the state of Indiana, still
the most prestigious single state award in the game by miles.)
The yearbook is available for $22.95 at
