COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana preservationists say budget cuts are hurting efforts to save the state's architectural treasures.
The Republic reports the amount of money awarded through the Historic Preservation Fund has dropped by nearly $100,000 over the past year.
Indiana does not have separate state funds to address crumbling architecture. Money instead comes from the preservation fund, which receives federal dollars for that purpose.
Steven Kennedy of the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology says federal funding for the Historic Preservation Fund has been relatively stable. But the percentage of money going toward preservation has fallen from 76 percent in 2008 to about 55 percent this year because the agency has had to tap some federal funds to offset state budget cuts.
