JCPS School Board President says busing does not put students at greater risk

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The head of the Jefferson County Public School Board says busing students across town does not put students at higher risk for traffic accidents.

Some parents of the 51 students injured in Friday's bus crash are angry that their children were being bused more than 40 miles from their homes.  But School Board President Diane Porter says while the accident was unfortunate, it can happen anywhere and at anytime, and that the wreck had nothing to do with busing.

"The bus accident was that," she said.  "It had 48 children on the bus and three children in a car.  So that was an accident and the student assignment plan is completely different in my opinion."

Coming up today on WDRB News @ 4, Porter responds to other questions some parents raised following the bus crash, including why many middle school students who live in the west end cannot go to schools closer to their homes.
