Old elementary school reopens as a youth shelter

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- An old elementary school is reopened as a youth shelter.  The former Pineview Elementary school is now home to the Floyd County Youth Shelter.

It goes by the new name of Open Door Youth Services and offers more rooms, storage, and space.  Floyd County bought the school after it was closed because of budget reasons.

This is a big change for the children staying there since the original shelter was built in 1878.

Leah Pezzarossi, Executive Director, says, "They talked about how the dorm areas look like college dorms. We put chalkboard paint in all the bedrooms and immediately went to that and wrote their names and decorated. So there's a way for them to kind of make their mark."

County commissioners and a few other departments share the space with the shelter.
